QCE Earth & Environmental Science lessons

Interactive lessons for the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority’s Earth & Environmental Science syllabus (2025), set out in the syllabus order. The Queensland lessons use Queensland examples. Under each topic are its Queensland lessons, where there are any, and the site’s other lessons that cover part of the topic; those were written for the SACE subject outlines, for senior Geography or for Year 8, so check the fit against the syllabus before you use them.

Units 1 and 2 (Year 11) Units 3 and 4 (Year 12)

Unit 1: Introduction to Earth systems Year 11

Topic 1: Earth systems and models

Open, closed and isolated systems, the four spheres of Earth, and models of Earth processes and their limitations.

Lessons that cover part of this topic:

Topic 2: Development of the geosphere

Uniformitarianism, stratigraphy and the fossil record, radioactive dating, Earth’s interior, rocks and minerals, and soil.

Lessons that cover part of this topic:

Topic 3: Development of the atmosphere and hydrosphere

Water’s properties and where Earth’s water came from, and the layers, ozone layer and origin of the atmosphere.

QCE Units 1 and 2 Unit 1 Topic 3 · Unit 2 Topic 2 Reciprocal teaching

Air and water: a reciprocal teaching lesson

Eight short readings for groups of four, who take turns to predict, clarify, question and summarise: the oxygen story, the layers of the air, ozone and albedo, the greenhouse effect, the trade winds and the rain on the Wet Tropics coast, the origin of water, its properties, and El Niño, La Niña and south-east Queensland’s water.

Topic 4: Development of the biosphere

The origin and characteristics of the biosphere, and life from the past to the present.

Lessons that cover part of this topic:

Unit 2: Earth processes Energy transfers and transformations · Year 11

Topic 1: Energy for Earth processes

Energy in Earth systems, energy and the water cycle, and energy from Earth’s core.

Lessons that cover part of this topic:

Topic 2: Energy for atmospheric and hydrologic processes

Solar radiation, thermal radiation and the greenhouse effect, atmospheric circulation, ocean currents, and weather and climate, including El Niño and La Niña.

Lessons that cover part of this topic:

Topic 3: Energy for biogeochemical processes

Net primary production, ecosystem carrying capacity, and the cycling of matter, including the carbon cycle.

Lessons that cover part of this topic:

Unit 3: Living on Earth Extracting, using and managing Earth resources · Year 12

Topic 1: Use of non-renewable Earth resources

How mineral and energy resources form and are found, extracted and processed, and environmental monitoring and management.

QCE Units 3 and 4 Unit 3 Topic 1 Jigsaw

Ore deposits: how metals are concentrated, found and mined

Expert groups learn how metals are concentrated into ore, including Queensland’s alluvial gold and mineral sands, then teach their home groups. Survey a buried deposit, see how Ernest Henry was found and how it is mined, follow acid drainage at Mount Morgan, and judge how long Australia’s resources will last.

QCE Units 3 and 4 Unit 3 Topic 1 Concept attainment

Coal, oil and gas: how fossil fuels form, are found and are extracted

Work out from labelled examples what makes a rock coal, what makes a petroleum trap and what makes gas unconventional, with coal seam gas in Queensland. Then run a seismic survey, choose where to drill, and study the footprint of coal, oil and gas.

Topic 2: Use of renewable Earth resources

Renewable resources, ecosystems, the availability of fresh water, and sustainable harvesting.

Lessons that cover part of this topic:

Unit 4: The changing Earth The cause and impact of Earth hazards · Year 12

Topic 1: The cause and impact of Earth hazards

Hazards at plate boundaries and how they are predicted, cyclones, floods and droughts, and how human activity changes hazards.

Lessons that cover part of this topic:

Topic 2: The cause and impact of global climate change

Radiative forcing, natural and human causes of climate change, its impacts, palaeoclimates and climate models.
